Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in talks with the Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM) has proposed 6 airbags to be made standard in all cars for better safety of passengers. As of now, manufacturers are asked to provide a minimum of 2 airbags in all their models till 31 December 2021, right from the base variant. If 6-airbags are made compulsory, car manufacturers will have to make design changes as well as increase the prices of the cars to accommodate the side and curtain airbags.
